The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
