Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
