The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And affirms goodness, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
