The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
