The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Star when it setteth, 1 your comrade is not astray, neither errs, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is a revelations which has been revealed to him 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form); 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha [lote-tree of the utmost boundary (beyond which none can pass)], 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!) 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 (Among the idols) have you considered allat and al'uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 Shall you have the male issues, and He the female issues? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord! 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
