He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and who has fear of God, 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 Let him who will, pay heed to it. 12 (Contained) in honoured pages, 13 exalted and purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 Noble and righteous. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 And We made corn grow, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 olives, dates, 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 laughing and joyous 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
