And We did not send a prophet in a town but We overtook its people with distress and affliction in order that they might humble themselves. 94 Then We gave them good in the place of evil until they became many and said: Distress and happiness did indeed befall our fathers. Then We took them by surprise while they did not perceive. 95 Had the people of the towns believed (in Our revelations) and maintained piety, We would have certainly showered on them Our blessings from the sky and the earth. But they called Our revelations lies, thus Our torment struck them for their evil deeds. 96 Do the people of those towns feel secure that Our punishment will not come to them at night while they are asleep? 97 Or else did they feel secure against its coming in broad daylight while they played about (care-free)? 98 Do they feel secure against God's devising? No one feels secure against God's devising except for those doomed to ruin. 99
