We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 Yet when he brought forth Clear Signs from Us, then lo, they burst into laughter. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And the Pharaoh said to his people: "O people, is not mine the kingdom of Egypt and these rivers that flow at my feet? Can you still not comprehend? 51 I am surely better than this fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain! 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 In this way he fooled his people and they obeyed him: they were a rebellious people. 54 So when they vexed Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all. 55 And We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them). 56
