In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
You, who have wrapped yourself up with a mantle, 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 Half of it - or subtract from it a little 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Behold, We shall bestow upon thee a weighty message 5 Indeed, the hours of the night are more effective for concurrence [of heart and tongue] and more suitable for words. 6 You have by day prolonged occupations. 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 [He is] the Lord of the East and the West; there is no deity except Him, so take Him as Disposer of [your] affairs. 9 And be patient over what they say and avoid them with gracious avoidance. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 Indeed We have heavy fetters and a blazing fire. 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment, 13 One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Surely We have sent unto you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger, 15 But the Pharaoh disobeyed the apostle; so We seized him with a grievous punishment. 16 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
