The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 Who taught (to write) with the pen 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 6 In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the returning. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 a servant (of Allah) when he prays? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 Or had enjoined piety, (it would have been better)? 12 Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees everything? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We shall call the guards of Hell. 18 Beware! Do not obey him, but bow in adoration and draw near (to your Lord). ۩ 19
