Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain, if only ye would be convinced. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 Then they had turned away from him (Messenger Muhammad SAW) and said: "One (Muhammad SAW) taught (by a human being), a madman!" 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night you will be pursued.” 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
