The Thamud tribe denied the Noble Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?" 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 "And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
