A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Surely they were before that made to live in ease and plenty. 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Most surely eat of a tree of Zaqqoom, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
