And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Pharaoh issued a call to his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion over Egypt belong to me, since all these running waters flow at my feet? Can you not, then, see [that I am your lord supreme]? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all. 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
