The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 thy robes purify 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never! For he is an enemy to Our signs! 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He planned and plotted. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
