Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the dawn 1 and the ten nights, 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 and by the passing night, 4 Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and worked much corruption therein? 12 Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.' 15 whereas, whenever He tries him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, "My Sustainer has disgraced me!" 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled. 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 Join My worshipers and 29 And enter into My garden. 30
