The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And pollution shun. 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
