The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ WHEN WHAT IS to happen comes to pass -- 1 There is no belying its coming to pass-- 2 abasing [some,] exalting [others]! 3 When the earth shall be shaken with a (severe) shaking, 4 And the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling, 5 So that they become dust seattered. 6 And you will become divided into three categories. 7 (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? 8 And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand? 9 and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers 10 They shall be near-stationed (to their Lord), 11 In Gardens of Delight. 12 a host of the ancients 13 And a few of later ages, 14 On couches in wrought with gold. 15 Reclining on them, facing one another. 16 immortal youths shall go about them 17 with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring 18 Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, 19 And fruit that they prefer 20 and such flesh of fowl as they desire, 21 And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes, 22 Like pearls safely hidden. 23 [And this will be] a reward for what they did [in life]. 24 They will not hear therein any vain or sinful talk, 25 Other than "Peace, peace" the salutation. 26 The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? 27 They shall be in the midst of thornless lote trees, 28 and clustered bananas, 29 and extended shade, 30 and gushing water, 31 And fruits numberless, 32 That will neither finish, nor ever be stopped. 33 and upraised couches. 34 Perfectly We formed them, perfect, 35 So made them as maidens. 36 loving companions, matching in age, 37 For the sake of the companions of the right hand. 38

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
