The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge: 109 who seeks to drive you from your land!" Pharaoh said, "What then do you advise?" 110 They said: put him and his brother off, and send unto the cities callers. 111 "To bring all the wise magicians to you." 112 So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!" 113 The Pharaoh replied, "In addition to your rewards, you will become my close friends thereafter." 114 They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]." 115 He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic. 116 We said to Moses: "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed up their conjurations in no time. 117 ۞ Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed. 118 Pharaoh and his men were defeated and put to shame, 119 and the sorcerers prostrated themselves, 120 saying: 'We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 121 The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Pharaoh said, "You dare believe in Him before I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have devised in this city in order to drive its people out. But you shall soon know the consequences, 123 Surely I will cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides and thereafter I will crucify you all. 124 They replied, "We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 for thou takest vengeance on us only because we have come to believe in our Sustainer's messages as soon as they came to us. O our Sustainer! Shower us with patience in adversity, and make us die as men who have surrendered themselves unto Thee!" 126
