Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician 109 who seeks to drive you from your land what do you command' 110 They said, “Stop him and his brother, and send announcers to the cities to gather people.” 111 to summon every wellversed sorcerer to you' 112 And the sorcerers came unto Pharaoh [and] said: "Verily, we ought to have a great reward if it is we who prevail." 113 'Yes' he answered, 'and you will be among those near' 114 They said: "O Moses! Either thou shalt throw [thy staff first,] or we shall [be the first to] throw." 115 Said Moses: "Throw ye (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of) magic. 116 And We inspired Moses (saying): Throw thy staff! And lo! it swallowed up their lying show. 117 ۞ Thus was the truth established, and their doings proved in vain. 118 So they were vanquished there, and they turned about, humbled. 119 And the wizards fell down prostrate, 120 They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron' 122 Pharaoh said, "You dare believe in Him before I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have devised in this city in order to drive its people out. But you shall soon know the consequences, 123 I shall assuredly cut off alternately your hands and feet, then I shall crucify you all together.' 124 They said: verily unto our Lord we are turning. 125 And what is it for which thou takest vengeance on us save that we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came unto us? Our Lord! pour out upon us perseverance and cause us to die as Muslims. 126
