And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnain. Say: "I shall recite to you something of his story." 83 Verily We established his power on earth, and We gave him the ways and the means to all ends. 84 With these he traveled 85 until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of murky water and near it he found some people. We said, "Dhu'l-Qarnayn! You can either punish them or else you can treat them with gentleness." 86 He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment. 87 As for those who believe and do good, they will receive virtuous rewards and We will tell them to do only what they can. 88 Then he set out on another expedition 89 to the East where he found the sun rising upon a people whom We had exposed to its rays. 90 So (it was). And We knew all concerning him. 91 Then he followed a way 92 Until, when he reached between two mountains, he found, before (near) them (those two mountains), a people who scarcely understood a word. 93 They said: O Zulqarnain! surely Gog and Magog make mischief in the land. Shall we then pay you a tribute on condition that you should raise a barrier between us and them 94 He replied, "The power that my Lord has granted me is better (than your tax). Help me with your man-power and I shall construct a barrier between you and Gog and Magog. 95 Bring me ingots of iron." Then after he had filled up the space between the two mountain-sides, he said: "(Light a fire) and ply bellows." When he had made it (red like) fire, he said: "Bring me molten copper which I may pour on it." 96 Thereafter they could neither scale it, nor could they pierce it. 97 [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true." 98 ۞ And on that Day We shall let some of them surge like waves against others, and the Trumpet shall be blown. Then We shall gather them all together. 99 And We shall present Hell that day for Unbelievers to see, all spread out,- 100 Those whose eyes were hoodwinked from My reminder, and who could not bear to hear. 101
