Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
KaafHaYa'aeenSaad. 1 This is the story of the blessing of your Lord to His servant Zachariah. 2 When he cried unto his Lord a cry in secret, 3 "Lord, my bones have weakened and my head has turned hoary with age, but never, Lord, have I been disappointed in my prayer to you: 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!". 6 [Thereupon the angels called out unto him: "O Zachariah! We bring thee the glad tiding of [the birth of] a son whose name shall be John. [And God says,] "Never have We given this name to anyone before him." 7 He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?" 8 He said: So (it will be). Thy Lord saith: It is easy for Me, even as I created thee before, when thou wast naught. 9 [Zachariah] prayed: "O my Sustainer! Appoint a sign for me!" Said [the angel]: "Thy sign shall be that for full three nights [and days] thou wilt not speak unto men". 10 Thereupon Zechariah came out from the sanctuary and directed his people by gestures to extol His glory by day and by night. 11 (We said:) "O John, hold fast to the Book;" and We gave him wisdom right from boyhood, 12 And tenderness from Us and purity, and he was one who guarded (against evil), 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
