Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 and the ten nights! 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the Night when it passeth away;- 4 Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley? 9 And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts, 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 and spread much corruption in the land. 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people). 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak, 19 And you love wealth with exceeding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O the contented soul! 27 return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing! 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 enter My Paradise! 30
