We commanded Moses: "Journey by night with Our creatures, and strike a dry path for them through the sea. Do not fear being overtaken, nor have dread of any thing." 77 Pharaoh pursued them with his legions so they were overwhelmed from the sea with that which drowned them. 78 And Firaun led his people astray, and did not guide them. 79 Children of Israel! We saved you from your enemies and made a covenant with you on the right side of the Mountain. We sent down manna and quails. 80 "Partake of the good things which We have provided for you as sustenance, but do not transgress therein the bounds of equity lest My condemnation fall upon you: for, he upon whom My condemnation falls has indeed thrown himself into utter ruin!" 81 And lo! verily I am Forgiving toward him who repenteth and believeth and doeth good, and afterward walketh aright. 82 ۞ And what hath made thee hasten from thy people, O Musa? 83 He said: "They are close behind me, and I hastened to You, Lord, that You may be pleased with me." 84 Said He, 'We have tempted thy people since thou didst leave them. The Samaritan has misled them into error.' 85 Then Moses returned very angry and sorrowful to his people, saying, 'My people, did your Lord not promise a fair promise to you? Did the time of the covenant seem so long to you, or did you desire that anger should alight on you from your Lord, so that you failed in your tryst with me?' 86 They answered: "We did not break our promise with you out of our own volition; but we were laden with the load of people's ornaments, and we simply threw them down(into the fire), and the Samiri also threw down something, 87 and made a calf for them, a figure that lowed. "This," they said, "is your god and the god of Moses but whom he has forgotten." 88 What! could they not see that it did not return to them a reply, and (that) it did not control any harm or benefit for them? 89
