۞ We bestowed aforetime on Abraham his rectitude of conduct, and well were We acquainted with him. 51 Recall, when he said to his father and his people: "What are these images to which you are devoutly clinging?" 52 They answered: "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 Said he: "Indeed, you and your forefathers have obviously gone astray!" 54 They said: "Are you speaking in earnest, or only jesting?" 55 He said: "In fact it was your Lord, the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who created them; and I bear witness to this. 56 And by Allah I shall surely devise a plot against your idols after ye turned away backward. 57 He broke them all into pieces, except their great one so that they might return to it. 58 (When the people came to the temple and saw the broken idols) they asked each other, "Who has done this to our gods? He certainly is an unjust person". 59 They said, 'We heard a young man making mention of them, and he was called Abraham.' 60 Said they: Then bring him before the eyes of the people, perhaps they may bear witness. 61 They asked, "Abraham, did you do this to our idols?" 62 He answered: "Nay, it was this one, the biggest of them, that did it: but ask them [yourselves] - provided they can speak!" 63 So they turned towards their own selves and (inwardly) said, “Indeed you yourselves are unjust.” 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 He said: worship ye, then, beside Allah, that which profiteth you not at all, nor it hurteth you? 66 Fie on you and those you worship besides God! Will you not understand?" 67 They said: "Burn him, and save your gods, if you are men of action." 68 We said: O fire! be a comfort and peace to Ibrahim; 69 Then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most! 70 So We delivered him and Lot, and brought them to the land We had blessed for all the people. 71 We gave him, in excess, Isaac, and Jacob (for a grandson); and We made each righteous 72 And We made them chiefs who guide by Our command, and We inspired in them the doing of good deeds and the right establishment of worship and the giving of alms, and they were worshippers of Us (alone). 73 And Lot -- to him We gave judgment and knowledge; and we delivered him from the city that had been doing deeds of corruption; they were an evil people, truly ungodly; 74 And We admitted him to Our Mercy, truly, he was of the righteous. 75
