Thamud denied the messengers 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
