The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So be mindful of God and listen to me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
