We sent Moses to the Pharaoh and his nobles with Our miracles and he said, "I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Universe". 46 But when he brought them Our tokens, behold! they laughed at them. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 And they said [to Moses], "O magician, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. Indeed, we will be guided." 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
