We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 And We showed them not a sign except that it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with affliction that perhaps they might return [to faith]. 48 And they said: magician! supplicate thy Lord for us for that which He hath covenanted with thee; verily we shall let ourselves be guided. 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Or am I better than this man, who is contemptible and scarcely makes things clear? 52 "Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?" 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
