The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 your companion is neither astray, neither errs, 2 nor does he speak out of his desire. 3 It is but a divine revelation, which is revealed to him. 4 He was taught by one Mighty in Power, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 While he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer; 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth? 12 And assuredly he saw him at another descent. 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 When that which covers covered the lote-tree; 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 What! unto you the males and unto Him the females? 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
