Indeed We sent Moses with Our Signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He told them: “I am a Messenger of the Lord of the Universe.” 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Or am I better than this man, who is contemptible and scarcely makes things clear? 52 "Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?" 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 So when they angered Us, We punished them, and drowned them all. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
