Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
HaMeem 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 We revealed it on a Blessed Night, for We were intent on warning; 3 therein every wise bidding 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is only One Lord. It is He who gives life and causes things to die. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us we now accept faith.” 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 But if you do not believe what I say, leave me alone (and desist from laying hands on me).” 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
