Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 therein every wise bidding 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 In fact, the unbelievers have doubts because of excessive involvement in worldly affairs. 9 Then watch thou for the Day that the sky will bring forth a kind of smoke (or mist) plainly visible, 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 “And leave the sea as it is, parted in several places; indeed that army will be drowned.” 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
