Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Mim. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of yore. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 Then neither the sky shed tears over them nor the earth. They were granted no respite. 29
