Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And corn-fields and noble buildings, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
