A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Tell Me! The seed that you sow in the ground. 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
