A company of the former peoples 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
