A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islam). 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
