A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the fellows on the left hand; how miserable shall the fellows on the left hand be! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
