A crowd of earlier generations 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
