a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 And say: "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
