The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 "I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you." 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 "Therefore fear Allah and obey me." 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
