The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 will strip-off the flesh 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; 20 And when good touches him, withholding [of it], 21 except those who are steadfast 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking); 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
