The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For those who beg, and for the needy who cannot even ask. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 save from their wives and what their right hands own, then not being blameworthy 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
