The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)! 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
