O thou enwrapped! 1 Rise to pray in the night except a little, 2 half the night, or a little less 3 or add to it [at will]; and [during that time] recite the Qur'an calmly and distinctly, with thy mind attuned to its meaning. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Indeed getting up in the night is tougher, and the words flow with strength. 6 Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation. 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 Lord of the east and the west! No God is there but He! Wherefore take Him for thy trustee. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 Surely with Us are heavy fetters and a flaming fire, 12 And food that will stick in the throat, and painful torment 13 On the Day when the earth with all its mountains quake and the mountains become heaps of shifting sand. 14 Surely We have sent to you an Apostle, a witness against you, as We sent an apostle to Firon. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired? 17 The heaven shall rend asunder thereby; His promise is ever brought to fulfillment. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
