The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 I will make a distressing punishment overtake him. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
