The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 Arise and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And stay away from idols. 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 To whom I granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 whose life I have made run smoothly 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It spares nothing; it leaves nothing intact; 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are appointed nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
