The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 And your garments purify! 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)! 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then looked he, 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will surely roast him in the Scorching. 26 and what will teach thee what is Sakar? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
