The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise and give warning! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And all abomination shun! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 it will be a hard day 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 and who still desires more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Verily he considered, and devised. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 Then looked he, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
